TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Manpower Yassierli has responded to demands for a minimum wage increase voiced by workers during a mass demonstration on Monday, September 22, 2025.

Thousands of protesters from the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) and the Labour Party urged the government to raise the minimum wage by 8.5 to 10.5 percent.

Yassierli said the government is currently evaluating the proposal. “We are listening to the aspirations of workers as well as employers. The issue will be assessed through the National Tripartite Cooperation Agency (LKS),” he told reporters at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs office in Jakarta.

He noted that the government still has time to deliberate before the official announcement of the 2026 minimum wage in November. The final decision, Yassierli added, will be followed by the issuance of regulations on the Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP). When pressed on whether an increase is likely, he declined to confirm.

“Let’s just wait for the evaluation process,” he said.

Three Demands from Workers

The wage hike was one of three key demands raised by KSPI and the Labour Party during the rally outside the People’s Consultative Assembly building in Jakarta. KSPI and Labour Party President Said Iqbal claimed that more than 5,000 people joined the protest.

Iqbal said the first demand was for President Prabowo Subianto’s administration to strengthen the role of civil society.

He stressed that public order and security should be handled by the Indonesian National Police (Polri) rather than involving the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). “The TNI’s role is in defense, not public security,” he asserted.

The second demand concerned ending what workers described as “cheap labor practices.” They pressed for an 8.5 to 10.5 percent wage increase and called for the abolition of outsourcing by revoking Government Regulation Number 35 of 2021.

The final demand was for the enactment of a new Manpower Bill. Iqbal urged the government to follow up on Constitutional Court Decision Number 168 of 2023, which addressed a judicial review of the Job Creation Law (Undang-undang Cipta Kerja)
