TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 337 people have died in recent days after flash floods struck northwest Pakistan. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said dozens remain missing after heavy rains triggered water surges in mountainous areas, Al Jazeera reported.

Remote Village Becomes Search Center

In Kishtwar district, rescue teams continued searching for victims in Chositi Village on Sunday, August 17. At least 60 people were killed, about 150 were injured, and 50 of them remain in critical condition.

Emergency services spokesperson Mohammad Suhail said 54 bodies were recovered in Buner district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with several residents still unaccounted for.

He explained that the flood carried large rocks from the mountains and struck homes with explosive force.

Criticism of the Warning System

Some residents accused the government of failing to provide early alerts. In remote areas, mosque loudspeakers are usually used for evacuation warnings, but none were heard.

Mohammad Iqbal, a teacher in Pir Baba Village, said many victims were trapped because the information arrived too late. "Those who survived fled without taking anything," he said.

The NDMA rejected allegations of negligence. According to ABC News, the agency stated that Friday’s rains were so intense that flooding occurred before warnings could be issued.

NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider said Pakistan is facing shifting weather patterns linked to the climate crisis. He added that since the monsoon began in June, rainfall has increased by 50 percent compared to the same period last year.

Asfandyar Khan Khattak, Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, said no system in the world can predict the exact time and location of sudden downpours. Authorities have warned of potential flash floods and landslides through next Tuesday.

Flash floods also hit Indian-administered Kashmir. At least 60 people died when waters swept through a Himalayan village, destroying a community kitchen that sheltered more than 100 Hindu pilgrims.

In Kathua district, seven people were killed and five injured by a flash flood on Saturday night, according to local officials.
