TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Forestry Ministry has announced updated requirements for hikers following a recent overhaul of Mount Rinjani's management. According to the Director of Environmental Services Utilization, Nandang Prihadi, one key requirement is that all hikers must have prior experience hiking other mountains. This is because the Rinjani hiking route is now classified as a Level IV difficulty, making it unsuitable for novice hikers.
"For now, proof is based on self-confirmation, such as showing photos from other mountains or social media posts from previous climbs," Nandang said during a press conference at his office on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
In the future, he added, an electronic certification system will be implemented to provide an official document verifying a hiker's experience. However, this system is not yet operational.
Future ticket purchases will also include mandatory insurance to cover accident-related costs. However, the exact contributions and their amounts have not been finalized. This insurance will provide a crucial benefit: helicopter evacuation if needed. "Hikers can choose between standard or premium insurance," Nandang said.
The entrance fee has been adjusted as well. The Sembalun, Senaru, and Toreang routes, now designated as Class 1, have a higher fee, while the three other available routes retain their Class 2 fee. This change is intended to help limit the number of visitors.
Furthermore, a new policy for guides is now in effect. All guides must possess professional competency certificates registered with both the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) and the Rinjani National Park Office.
Each guide can now accompany a maximum of five hikers, a reduction from the previous limit of six. This ratio will remain in place until December 2025. "Starting January 1, 2026, the ratio will be one guide for every four hikers," Nandang announced.
Hikers under 17 years of age must be accompanied by a guide. Those aged 17 and older can either hire a guide or be accompanied by a more experienced hiker. Hikers who are exactly 17 must also present a written permission letter from a parent or guardian.
Regarding porter services, a new ratio has also been established: one porter can now accompany a maximum of two foreign tourists or three domestic tourists.
Prior to the ascent, all hikers must undergo a health test at a local health facility. This differs from the previous Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), which required the health test to be conducted three days before the climb. "This [updated] SOP has been in effect since August 11," Nandang confirmed.
These new hiking requirements and conditions were implemented in response to several accidents that have occurred on the Mount Rinjani hiking route. To facilitate these changes and improve management, the Ministry of Forestry temporarily closed the park from August 1-10.
