TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Islamic organization, Islamic Brotherhood Front (FPI), has issued a warning to the government regarding the plan to deploy 8,000 soldiers to the Gaza Strip, Palestine. The FPI cautioned the deployed Indonesian peacekeepers not to engage directly with the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.
Secretary of the Consultative Assembly of FPI Hanif Alatas conveyed this during an iftar event with President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Hanif said he attended on behalf of Rizieq Syihab, who was invited by Prabowo.
"We ask for the Indonesian troops dispatched to Gaza not to make direct engagement with Hamas fighters; we do not want that," Hanif remarked on Thursday evening.
Hanif said the FPI supports the peacekeeping mission if the mission aims to support the independence of Palestine. FPI is even prepared to assist in mobilizing volunteers to be sent to Gaza. However, the deployment under the US-led Board of Peace mandate is deemed to have different implications.
"If the soldiers are sent to Gaza under American command to disarm the fighters in Gaza, leading to a confrontation, this is what we do not want," Hanif stated.
FPI has also sent a formal request to President Prabowo to withdraw from the Board of Peace. "We have submitted a letter through one of the ministers," he said.
"It is not because we do not trust the President, no, but we do not trust America, we do not trust Israel," he added.
Indonesia has committed to sending 8,000 TNI soldiers to the Gaza Strip through the International Stabilization Force (ISF), a figure higher than any other country involved.
The force is led by Commander Jasper Jeffers, an American major general, with Indonesia tapped as the deputy commander of the ISF.
The soldiers scheduled for deployment come from the Indonesian Army Corps of Engineers, a health battalion, a mechanic battalion, and a support battalion. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Indonesian forces would use weapons for self-defense in limited capacity and would have a non-combatant or non-direct combat participation nature. The TNI is also said to not partake in disarmament and will focus on providing humanitarian aid.
