G7 Urges India and Pakistan to Engage in Dialogue Amid Escalating Hostilities

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amid escalating hostilities, the Group of Seven (G7) countries have urged India and Pakistan to exercise "maximum restraint" and called for "immediate de-escalation."

"Further military escalation poses a serious threat to regional stability. We are deeply concerned for the safety of civilians on both sides,” stated Canada on behalf of the G7 foreign ministers in a statement released on Friday, prior to the latest round of attacks, as reported by The Hindu.

"We call for immediate de-escalation and encourage both countries to engage in direct dialogue towards a peaceful outcome," the statement emphasized.

The Indian army reported in a statement on Friday night that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were detected at 26 locations in the Indian state bordering Pakistan and in Indian-controlled Kashmir, including Srinagar, the region's main city.

According to the statement, these UAVs were tracked and subsequently shot down. "We continue to monitor events closely and express our support for a swift and lasting diplomatic resolution," the statement affirmed.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has accused India of firing missiles at three of its air bases the previous Saturday, including one near the capital, Islamabad. However, Pakistan's air defenses reportedly intercepted the majority of these missiles.

"India, through its planes, launched air-to-surface missiles … Nur Khan base, Mureed base, and Shorkot base were made targets," Pakistani military spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry said in a late-night televised statement.

One of the targeted air bases is located in Rawalpindi, a garrison city just outside Islamabad, while the other two are located in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, bordering India.

A Pakistani military spokesman indicated that only a few missiles managed to bypass air defenses, and initial damage assessments suggest that these missiles did not strike any air force assets.
