TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni entrusted law enforcement officials with investigating the causes of forest and land fires in Mount Bromo, East Java.
"We are leaving the investigation to law enforcement," said the Minister of Forestry, when asked about the possibility of deliberate action in triggering the fire, in a press statement delivered in Mount Bromo, East Java, on Sunday, as quoted by ANTARA.
The Minister of Forestry emphasized that law enforcement officers are strongly committed to taking firm action against any party proven to have carried out prohibited activities that trigger forest or land fires.
"Anyone who burns forests and land will receive appropriate punishment," he said.
The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) Center, previously on Friday, August 7, stated that the cause of the fire in the Mount Bromo area was suspected to be human activity. This suspicion is based on the location where the fire originated in the Bantengan Block area.
The TNBTS Center stated that a traditional route or shortcut connects Arjosari Village and Ranu Pani. TNBTS believes that the fires may have been started during the cold weather in the area but were not extinguished properly.
Therefore, the government urges the public to avoid using fire when carrying out activities in forest areas because it could trigger a recurrence of fire incidents.
The Minister of Forestry added that the El Nino phenomenon impacted the dry season, making it drier. "Once again, please don't play with fire," said Raja Juli.
During his visit to Mount Bromo, the minister observed the efforts to extinguish the fires in the Probolinggo Regency forest area in East Java firsthand.
Raja Juli was accompanied by the Deputy Governor of East Java, Emil Elestianto Dardak, along with regional officials from Probolinggo Regency.
