TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Greece is bracing for the peak of a heat wave that is expected to reach temperatures of 41 degrees Celsius in some areas early this week, while a wildfire on the island of Salamis, near Athens, was brought under control on Sunday.
The heat began on Saturday, July 18, and will continue to intensify on Monday and Tuesday, with mainland Greece and the island of Crete expected to record record highs, according to the Greek national meteorological service.
According to the Athens National Observatory, temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in Greece this year were recorded for the first time on Saturday, July 21, in the northwestern Greek city of Konitsa, with a high of 40.4 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, temperatures of 39.3 degrees Celsius were recorded in Sparta and 38.9 degrees Celsius in Petrokefali, Crete, and Farsala, central Greece, according to ERT, as quoted Anadolu.
The hottest conditions are expected on Monday and Tuesday, July 21, with temperatures likely to reach 40-41 degrees Celsius in mainland Greece and the island of Crete.
High temperatures are expected to ease in northern Greece starting Wednesday, July 22nd, before a larger drop in temperatures is expected nationwide on Thursday, July 23.
Meanwhile, firefighters have brought a fire under control in the Selinia region of Salamis Island, located west of Athens.
The local fire department stated that a small fire had broken out again in the southern part of the fire zone. Firefighting aircraft were immediately deployed to bring the situation under control.
The fire spread to a forested area near residential areas, with steep terrain complicating firefighting efforts. Thick smoke also covered parts of the area, and firefighters remained on standby to prevent further fires.
Meanwhile, Salamis Mayor Giorgio Panagopoulos said that as a precaution, local residents and tourists from the Panorama A and Panorama B settlements had been safely evacuated without injury.
Separately, another wildfire broke out again in a forested area near Rodolivoi in the Serres region of northern Greece. A total of 20 firefighters, eight fire engines, and water tankers were deployed to combat the blaze.
Local authorities said the fire was burning far from residential areas and critical infrastructure. An investigation team has been deployed to determine the cause of the fire.
