TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Palestinian militant group Hamas has rejected Israel’s plan to relocate residents of Gaza, calling it another attempt at genocide and mass displacement.
According to Al Jazeera, Hamas said Israel’s recent move to deploy tents and protective equipment in southern Gaza is a tactic of deception. The group accused Israel of disguising its military operations as humanitarian efforts while continuing what it described as crimes against Palestinians.
The Israeli military announced that since Sunday, August 17, 2025, it has been preparing relocation centers in the south of the enclave. Officials stated the relocation is meant to protect civilians from ongoing combat in northern Gaza.
Israel has long argued that moving residents out of active conflict areas is necessary for their safety.
Hamas, however, warned that the relocation is tied to Israel’s broader military strategy. Earlier this month, Israel confirmed its plan to launch a new offensive to seize northern Gaza City, the enclave’s largest urban center.
The plan has fueled global concern over the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, which is home to 2.2 million people.
The war entered its third year after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and abducting 251 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. Of the 50 hostages believed to remain in Gaza, around 20 are thought to still be alive.
Israel’s retaliatory campaign has left widespread devastation. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that more than 61,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began. The airstrikes and ground operations have displaced most of the population, destroyed infrastructure, and pushed the enclave into a severe humanitarian crisis.
International organizations continue to warn that further forced relocations would only worsen conditions for Gaza’s civilians, many of whom have already been displaced multiple times since the war began.
