TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rain drenched the Greater Jakarta area since early morning of Monday, February 23, 2026. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), moderate rain is expected throughout the day in certain areas of Jakarta and its surrounding areas.
As quoted from the BMKG's website, moderate rain is predicted in the Bogor Regency, as well as Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, South Jakarta, and East Jakarta. Furthermore, according to the BMKG, light rain is expected for the rest of the day.
The early warning of rain issued by the BMKG places Jakarta among the areas on alert for the potential of moderate to heavy rain today. This status is similar to yesterday's and is also predicted to continue tomorrow.
For comparison, several areas that have been placed on standby (with the potential for heavy to very heavy rain) include Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, and the Nusa Tenggara region. The BMKG's Weekly Weather Outlook for the period of February 23-26 states that Jakarta should prepare for strong winds.
Factors Behind the Increase in Rain
According to the BMKG, the weak La Nina condition still has the potential to increase the formation of rain clouds, especially in the eastern part of Indonesia. Additionally, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) continues to influence atmospheric conditions in Indonesia, significantly contributing to the formation of rain clouds across nearly the entire country.
Furthermore, the combination of MJO, Kelvin Waves, and Equatorial Rossby Waves is observed to be active in the Lampung region, the western part of the Java Sea, the central part of the Java Sea, the waters of Bengkulu, South Sumatra, and the western Indian Ocean off the coast of Bengkulu.
The Asian monsoon is still active, supplying significant amounts of air masses and water vapor to Indonesia. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation is observed in the southwest Indian Ocean off the coasts of Banten and West Kalimantan.
Separately, researchers at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Erma Yulihastin, revealed that an increase in rain is still expected in the southern regions of Indonesia due to the strengthening of the Asian monsoon through the phenomenon of Cross Equatorial North Surge or the intrusion of cold air from the north passing through the equator.
Furthermore, she also pointed out the presence of Rossby waves and vortices, or cyclonic circulations, in southern Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. "These bring moisture and concentrate convective clouds in the southern part of Indonesia, although tending towards the southeastern region," she stated in a release shared on Sunday evening.
