TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of Indonesian capital market investors continues to expand, reaching 31.14 million by August 2026. This growth indicates growing public interest in investment, particularly among the younger generation.
Robust growth is equally evident in North Sumatra. As of July 2026, the province logged 1.49 million Single Investor Identifications (SIDs). This figure positions North Sumatra as the province with the largest capital market investor base outside Java.
Head of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) Representative Office in North Sumatra, Muhammad Pintor Nasution, cited this milestone as a major achievement. "North Sumatra holds the top position outside Java for both investor and issuer categories," he said in Medan on Friday, September 11, 2026.
Investor distribution remains concentrated in Medan with 396,261 SIDs, followed by Deli Serdang Regency with 202,644 SIDs, Langkat Regency with 79,797 SIDs, Simalungun Regency with 76,266 SIDs, and Asahan Regency with 59,252 SIDs.
In addition to expanding the retail investor base, the IDX is also raising the bar for companies seeking to go public on the exchange. One of the requirements focus on corporate leadership, including a mandate that finance directors hold an educational background in economics.
Pintor noted that these standards have led some candidates to fall short, such as Bank Sumut, which voluntarily withdrew its stock listing registration plan. "This condition shows that capital market growth is not solely determined by an increasing number of investors, but also by the readiness and corporate governance of companies seeking to raise funds through the exchange," he stated.
The capital market ecosystem in North Sumatra is further bolstered by local securities firms and investment galleries across several universities and institutions. Regional data highlights a range of active securities firms operating in Medan, including BNI Sekuritas, BRI Danareksa Sekuritas, Indo Premier Sekuritas, Mandiri Sekuritas, Mirae Asset Sekuritas, among others.
In addition to brokerage firms, financial literacy and investor participation are supported by BEI investment galleries at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), Universitas Negeri Medan (Unimed), Universitas Methodist Indonesia, Universitas Nias, and other higher education institutions. An additional eight investment galleries are currently in the pipeline.
"Room for capital market expansion in North Sumatra remains open across investor growth, educational access, and investment," Pintor concluded.
