How Will Indonesia Mitigate El Nino's Impact on Agriculture?

5 hours ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Food Agency (Bapanas) said the long dry season associated with El Nino has yet to show impact on the Indonesian agricultural sector. The agency is also working closely with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to monitor weather changes.

"The current weather is still quite normal, so it has not affected the agriculture just yet. Therefore, production growth remains achievable," said Bapanas secretary-general Sarwo Edhy in a written statement on Friday, June 26, 2026.

The agency, Sarwo said, has been educating farmers to follow the planting patterns recommended by the government.

Regarding food security, Sarwo said the government has reinforced the government's food reserves ahead of El Nino, especially for rice.

Until June, Bapanas' Food Balance Projection estimated a total of 19.2 million tons of rice production in the first half of 2026, exceeding the needs of 15.4 million tons.

Sarwo stated that most of the projected surplus of rice production, around 3.7 million tons, has been converted into the government's reserve stocks through the procurement by Bulog. From the beginning of the year until June 26, Bulog has procured an equivalent of 3.2 million tons of rice.

Meanwhile, the Food Balance Projection in early June estimated the rice stock until the end of the year to be 16.24 million tons, derived from the initial stock in 2026 of 12.54 million tons, plus the yearly production projection of 34.76 million tons, and minus the yearly consumption needs of 31.1 million tons.

With the year-end rice balance projection of 16.24 million tons, Bapanas is optimistic that the rice reserves remain safe for the first 5 months of 2027.
