TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono denies any negotiation between the Indonesian government and Israel regarding the plan to evacuate Gaza refugees to Indonesia.
Israeli and international media had previously reported that several countries were interested in accommodating Gaza residents. Senior Israeli officials were also reported to have held negotiations with Indonesia.
"We have never negotiated with them. I don't know who did, but we didn't," said Sugiono at the Annual Session of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly, Parliament Complex of the DPR/MPR RI, Jakarta, August 15, 2025.
Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia's plan to evacuate Gaza refugees is an act of pure goodwill. He mentioned that President Prabowo Subianto conveyed the plan during his visit to Jordan in April this year.
"There have been no discussions from anyone. He conveyed that we will help heal the people of Gaza, and then we see the dynamics up to this point," said Sugiono. "So what I want to convey is that this is our humanitarian effort."
Sugiono mentioned that the head of state also consulted with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. "We all know that. We want to help," he said.
Before this, CNN reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in talks with several countries to accommodate Palestinian refugees from Gaza. Senior Israeli officials mentioned that these five countries are among them: South Sudan, Ethiopia, Libya, Somaliland, and Indonesia. These countries would receive international compensation and economic incentives if they agreed to accommodate Gaza residents.
Israeli media, Times of Israel, also reported on April 5 that the Israeli government had contacted several countries to accommodate Gaza residents. Senior Israeli officials stated that Israel had discussed the permanent relocation of Gaza residents with U.S. President Donald Trump. They revealed that several countries were interested in accommodating Gaza residents.
