TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono called for the principles of multilateralism and international law to be applied consistently, especially regarding the unresolved Palestine issue.

Addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) High-Level Open Debate in New York on Tuesday, May 26, Sugiono argued that current global instability stems not only from the UN Charter losing its relevance, but also from the fact that international principles are too often applied selectively.

"Indonesia views the situation in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, as a stark reflection of the international community's failure to uphold these principles fairly and consistently," Sugiono stated in an official release from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 27, as reported by Antara.

Therefore, Indonesia reiterates that a Two-State Solution, anchored in international law and relevant UN resolutions, remains the only path toward a just and lasting peace for Palestine, he asserted.

Sugiono also strongly condemned the escalating attacks against UN peacekeepers, framing them as a direct assault on the foundations of multilateralism. These incidents, he noted, underscore the critical and growing urgency of protecting blue helmets on the ground.

Furthermore, the Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of respecting international maritime law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to ensure that strategic global shipping lanes do not devolve into arenas of geopolitical confrontation.

He also underscored rising global security threats, including the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous weapons on the nature of modern conflict.

In response to shifting global geopolitical dynamics, Indonesia is renewing its push for a comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council to ensure it becomes more representative, transparent, accountable, and capable of amplifying the voices of developing nations.

"The world does not need a new hierarchy, but rather a renewed commitment to returning to the core principles of the UN Charter and strengthening a multilateralism that serves all countries equally," Sugiono remarked.

Alongside his address to the UN Security Council, Minister Sugiono held a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from China and Argentina to discuss strategic bilateral ties and current global events, while also holding separate talks with the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Bahrain, Kyrgyzstan, and Cuba.
