TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that the government is operating several alternative airports on a 24-hour basis to maintain smooth passenger mobility following the closure of eight airports due to the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
The alternative airports prepared include Kertajati Airport in Majalengka, Ahmad Yani Airport in Semarang, Juanda Airport in Surabaya, Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), and Adi Soemarmo Airport in Solo.
"I mentioned earlier that we are providing alternatives for airlines to use—since we have opened alternative airports like Kertajati, Semarang, Juanda, YIA (Yogyakarta), and Solo—for 24-hour operations," the Minister confirmed in Jakarta on Sunday.
The Minister explained that airlines could use these alternative airports for both landings and departures while operational conditions at the eight airports affected by volcanic ash remain unsuitable for flight safety.
The eight airports closed due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau eruption include Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Tangerang), Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (Jakarta), and Radin Inten II Airport (Lampung).
Also included are Husein Sastranegara Airport (Bandung), Budiarto Airport (Curug, Tangerang), Pondok Cabe Airport (South Tangerang), Taufik Kiemas Airport (West Coast, Lampung), and Atung Bungsu Airport (Pagar Alam, South Sumatra). The government has scheduled the closure of these eight airports until Sunday at 23:59 WIB.
The government is granting airlines the flexibility to decide whether to use these alternative airports based on operational needs, flight schedules, fleet readiness, and the provision of services to all affected passengers.
In addition to opening alternative airports, the Ministry of Transportation, together with InJourney Airports, is arranging ground transportation support to ensure that the transfer of passengers from Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Tangerang) to the substitute airports proceeds safely and conveniently. Ground transportation—including train and bus services—is being provided free of charge to passengers whose flights have been diverted to Kertajati, Juanda, Solo, Semarang, or Yogyakarta airports.
The Minister of Transportation emphasized that there is no charge for transport to these alternative airports; this measure is part of the service provided to passengers while flight operations at Soekarno-Hatta Airport are affected by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
The implementation of these services is being coordinated between InJourney Airports and the respective airlines to ensure passengers receive clear information regarding new departure locations and the government-provided supporting transport modes.
Information regarding flight diversions and departure schedules to alternative airports will be communicated directly to each passenger by the airlines through established service channels.
Nevertheless, the Minister explained that the decision to utilize alternative airports rests with the individual airlines, while passengers may choose to continue their journey via the substitute airport or cancel their flight based on their needs.
"It depends on the public whether they still wish to travel by shifting their journey to these alternative airports or to cancel their trip," stated Dudy.
The Minister hopes this policy will maintain the mobility of people with urgent travel needs to or from Jakarta without compromising flight safety while the government-mandated closure of eight airports remains in effect.
The government is also ensuring intensive coordination among stakeholders to ensure smooth flight operations via alternative airports and to mitigate the impact of air transport disruptions.
