TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi has directed all airlines to ensure that the rights of passengers affected by the closure of eight airports—due to the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau —are upheld through refund or flight rescheduling services.
"We have conveyed that all airlines must facilitate passengers' rights to reschedule or obtain ticket refunds," the Minister confirmed in Jakarta on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
However, the Minister acknowledged that he had not yet received reports of airlines having processed refunds, though all flight operators have been instructed to facilitate passenger rights in accordance with applicable regulations.
"We have not yet received reports (of airlines serving refunds)," he said.
In addition to refunds and rescheduling, the Ministry of Transportation has opened options to use alternative airports so that public travel can continue while operations at the eight affected airports remain temporarily suspended.
The alternative airports prepared include Kertajati Airport in Majalengka, Ahmad Yani Airport in Semarang, Juanda Airport in Surabaya, Yogyakarta International Airport, and Adi Soemarmo Airport in Solo.
The Minister has authorized airlines to use these alternative airports for takeoffs and landings, depending on operational needs and the evolving spread of volcanic ash.
The government, together with InJourney Airports, is also providing free ground transportation—such as trains and buses—for passengers whose flights have been diverted from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, to these alternative airports.
Information regarding flight diversions will be communicated directly to each passenger by their respective airlines.
Passengers may then choose to continue their journey via the alternative airport designated by the airline or cancel their trip, depending on their needs and available service policies.
The Minister emphasized that the government continues to strive to maintain passenger services by ensuring refund and rescheduling rights are met, providing supporting transportation, and maintaining intensive coordination with all aviation stakeholders.
The Ministry of Transportation has confirmed that passengers affected by flight cancellations resulting from the closure of several airports due to the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption will receive a full 100 percent ticket refund. Director General of Civil Aviation Lukman F. Laisa stated that the full refund policy applies to passengers whose flights were cancelled due to airport operational conditions affected by volcanic ash from the GAK eruption.
"Regarding flight cancellations or refunds, a 100 percent refund applies," said Lukman.
He emphasized that the full ticket refund serves as a form of public service, ensuring passengers do not suffer financial loss due to flight cancellations necessitated by flight safety considerations.
As of Sunday evening, September 6, 2026, eight airports remained closed due to volcanic ash from the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption, including Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Tangerang), Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (Jakarta), and Radin Inten II Airport (Lampung).
Also included were Husein Sastranegara Airport (Bandung), Budiarto Airport (Curug, Tangerang), Pondok Cabe Airport (South Tangerang), Taufik Kiemas Airport (West Pesisir, Lampung), and Atung Bungsu Airport (Pagar Alam, South Sumatra).
