TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's Chair of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR Speaker) Ahmad Muzani said that his visit along with Foreign Minister Sugiono to the funeral procession of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be accompanied by several clerics (ulama).
He stated that the entourage will depart from Jakarta to Iran on Thursday night, July 9, 2026. The entourage is expected to arrive on Friday, July 10, around 06.00 AM local time.
"(Who is in the entourage?) Me, the Foreign Minister, and several ulamas. I just don't know their names yet," Muzani said after visiting the leadership of the Constitutional Court on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
In this agenda, he continued, the Indonesian delegation is also planned not to stay overnight in Persia. The entourage will complete activities including meeting with Iranian authorities within one night.
Upon arrival in Mashhad, Iran on Friday morning, the activities will immediately include a visit to Ali Khamenei's tomb and meeting with the Foreign Minister and the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament.
"After that, we will return directly to Jakarta," said the Gerindra Party politician.
Muzani's assignment to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral has attracted attention because he was directly sent by President Prabowo Subianto. However, the president cannot instruct the MPR Chairman because their positions are equal.
Herdiansyah Hamzah, a Constitutional Law lecturer at Mulawarman University, said that President Prabowo Subianto's decision to send or instruct Muzani showed a lack of understanding of the relationship between state institutions.
According to him, although Muzani is a cadre of the Gerindra Party led by Prabowo, Prabowo must be able to distinguish assignments that can be carried out by his cadres in the state administration.
Herdiansyah said the party needed to eliminate the culture of power relations. "This is a wrong decision," said Herdiansyah.
After being widely questioned by the public, Muzani claimed that his position in the agenda was as an official representative representing Indonesia. "I was asked to depart to represent the Indonesian nation as an envoy of the president," said Muzani.
He also claimed to understand the position of the MPR with regard to the executive power. However, in this context, he said the president has the authority to assign someone to represent the country at a global forum.
"The head of state has the authority to decide who is deemed suitable to represent the country," he said.
