TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and Singapore plan to build joint military training facilities. President Prabowo Subianto and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong discussed the plan during their meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday, July 6, 2026.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) are set to build joint training facilities in Baturaja, West Kalimantan, and the Siabu Air Weapons Range.

"This initiative will provide beneficial opportunities for all parties to train together and strengthen our defense relations," Wong said during a joint press statement with Prabowo.

In addition to defense cooperation, Prabowo and Wong also discussed cross-border electricity trade.

"Indonesia has appointed BPI Danantara for the implementation of cross-border electricity trade and related commercial activities," Prabowo said.

Meanwhile, Wong said Singapore is exploring energy diversification after conflicts in the Middle East prompted the country to reassess its energy resilience. He said Indonesia has enormous renewable energy potential.

Therefore, energy cooperation between Singapore and Indonesia will focus, among other areas, on the development of renewable energy.

"Singapore wants to be Indonesia's partner in unlocking this potential," he said.

Wong said Singapore and Indonesia are currently working together to develop one of Indonesia's largest solar power plants in Morowali, Central Sulawesi. He added that more projects would follow.

One of them will be carried out through memorandums of understanding signed on Monday between Danantara and Singaporean companies Kappa Electric, Samcom Industries, and Singapore Energy Interconnections.

"This will provide a clear roadmap for negotiations and discussions among the parties to pave the way for cross-border electricity projects," Wong said.

He said the renewable energy projects would benefit both countries.

"This will also become an important foundation for the ASEAN power grid, strengthening energy resilience across our region," he said.

On Monday, Danantara signed three memorandums of understanding with several Singaporean energy companies to accelerate cross-border electricity trade projects between Indonesia and Singapore. The projects are targeted to reach a combined capacity of 3.4 gigawatts or more by 2035.

Danantara Investment Management (DIM) signed two memorandums of understanding with Keppel Electric and Sembcorp Utilities, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, to explore cooperation in purchasing low-carbon electricity exported to Singapore.

In addition, Danantara signed an MoU with Singapore Energy Interconnection to facilitate information exchange and explore cooperation on the commercial and technical aspects of developing cross-border electricity interconnection networks.

BPI Danantara Chief Executive Rosan Roeslani said the electricity exported from Indonesia to Singapore would come from new generation capacity, separate from domestic electricity supplies.

"This project will serve as a catalyst for Indonesia's green industrialization. The interconnection with Singapore is one manifestation of a broader strategic transformation," he said.
