TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian foreign minister Sugiono said he plans to attend the funeral of Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, alongside Gerindra Party colleague and Speaker of Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani. The two are scheduled to depart for Iran on July 9.
Sugiono said Indonesia has informed the Iranian government of its intention to send the delegation and is awaiting confirmation of the funeral arrangements.
"We are still waiting for details on the time and venue where we can participate in the funeral ceremony," Sugiono said in East Jakarta on Monday, July 6.
He explained that Indonesia had initially planned to be represented only by its ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah Soemirat, after receiving the funeral invitation while preparing for several state visits by foreign leaders to Jakarta.
"Several key officials also had prior commitments that made it impossible for them to attend," Sugiono said.
According to Sugiono, Indonesia later learned that Iran would only allow officials above ambassadorial rank to attend the funeral.
He said Tehran communicated the requirement on Thursday, July 2, just one day before the funeral ceremonies began.
Because of the short notice, Indonesia was unable to immediately appoint a new representative. Sugiono said Iranian authorities are now preparing to receive the Indonesian delegation.
Delegations and world leaders have continued to arrive in Tehran to pay their final respects to Khamenei. According to Anadolu, the official funeral ceremonies began on Saturday, July 4, at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla Complex.
Khamenei was killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli attack targeting his residence on February 28. He died alongside several members of his family, including his daughter, son-in-law, grandsons, and young granddaughters. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was wounded in the attack, was later appointed Iran's new supreme leader.
Among the foreign dignitaries attending the ceremonies were Dmitry Medvedev, representing Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Iraqi President Nizar Amidi, and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi.
A spokesperson for Iran's funeral committee said the official schedule remained subject to change, although the main public tribute ceremony was held on Saturday morning.
Under the current schedule, tribute ceremonies are taking place in Tehran through the weekend, attended by heads of state, senior officials, and religious leaders. Public memorial events were held on July 4 and 5, followed by the main funeral procession in Tehran on July 6.
The procession is then scheduled to continue to the holy city of Qom on July 7 before moving to Iraq, with ceremonies planned in Baghdad, Najaf, and Karbala. Religious and political leaders are expected to pay their respects before the funeral concludes.
The final burial is scheduled for July 9 at the Imam Ali Reza Mausoleum Complex in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam.
