TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Minister of Trade, Budi Santoso, has stated that he has coordinated with the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten) regarding the discovery of frozen shrimp suspected to be contaminated with the radioactive isotope Cesium-137 (Cs-137) that was exported to the United States.
"The KKP and Bapeten are currently inspecting the Cesium-137," said Budi Santoso at the Ministry of Trade office on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
The inspection is being conducted while the U.S. has not yet declared whether the imported shrimp is indeed contaminated with radioactive substances. The reason for the inspection at Bapeten, according to Budi Santoso, is to verify the accuracy of the U.S allegations. "So that everything becomes valid."
If the allegations are proven to be false, Budi Santoso said that the Ministry of Trade will attempt to negotiate with the U.S.
Budi Santoso stated that he has contacted the Indonesian Embassy in the U.S. regarding this case. The Minister of Trade confirmed that the government would continue to coordinate and evaluate this case. "Usually, the standards for food are very high, so we must prepare well so that there are no more issues like this in the future," said Budi Santoso.
The Minister of Trade assured that the discovery of radioactive contamination will not disrupt the export of other products. "There are no issues with the other products, right? Only one was found, so if the others are also okay, then there won't be any problems," said Budi Santoso.
On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised the public not to consume, sell, or serve dishes containing frozen shrimp produced by PT Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods) from Indonesia due to suspected radioactive contamination.
"The FDA is actively investigating the contamination of Cesium-137 (Cs-137) in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by PT Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods) from Indonesia," quoted the FDA's official statement on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
The FDA explained that the discovery stemmed from a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) report that Cs-137 had been detected in shipping containers at four ports: Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami.
