TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen made a flawless Grand Slam debut, successfully navigating the first round of the US Open 2025 qualifiers on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, local time. She is now just two victories away from securing a spot in the main draw.
On the hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Janice dominated her match against the 22nd seed, Varvara Lepchenko, with a decisive score of 6-3, 6-1. The victory took just one hour and one minute.
Janice's performance was spectacular, marked by only one unforced error. She won a total of 60 points, compared to her opponent's three unforced errors and 41 total points. The Jakarta-born player is now focused on her next two matches to earn a spot in the main draw.
Her next opponent in the qualifiers will be Polish player Maja Chawlinska, who defeated Italian player Georgia Pedone 6-2, 6-0.
Janice Tjen's Recent Success and Rankings
Janice entered the US Open with a career-high WTA ranking of 147. This achievement followed her impressive back-to-back runner-up finishes at the ITF W75 Lexington and ITF W100 Landisville tournaments in Pennsylvania earlier this month.
As part of her preparations for the US Open, Janice began her American tour at the ITF W100 Evansville tournament. However, the bronze medalist in women's doubles at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where she partnered with Aldila Sutjiadi, was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Janice's remarkable ascent into the WTA's top 200 allowed her to qualify for the US Open. This was a direct result of her outstanding form, which included being named the ITF Player of the Month for two consecutive months, May and June. During this period, she won 42 consecutive sets.
In May, Janice traveled to South Korea, where she captured two ITF W35 titles. She further enhanced her performance in June by winning four consecutive singles titles and three doubles titles in the same month.
Making Indonesian Tennis History
The 23-year-old athlete is the first Indonesian female singles player to compete in the US Open since Angelique Widjaja, who was eliminated in the first round of the main draw at the US Open 2004.
Janice is also the first Indonesian female singles player to reach a Grand Slam qualifier since Sandy Gumulya competed at the Australian Open 2008. Sandy, the sister of fellow tennis player Beatrice Gumulya, was stopped in the first round of the year's first major tournament.
