TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has temporarily lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), which had been in effect since October 12, 2023.
As quoted from the IOC's official website on Wednesday and cited by Antara, the IOC also recommended to international sports federations that the ban on Russian athletes no longer applies.
According to this decision, Russian athletes now have the opportunity to participate in international competitions, including qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
This decision was made after a thorough analysis by the IOC's Legal Affairs Commission, taking into account that the ROC no longer includes regional sports organizations within the jurisdiction of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine as its members.
Furthermore, the ROC has confirmed that it has not conducted, and will not conduct, any activities in those regions.
The IOC Executive Board will continue to closely monitor the situation regarding the ROC's activities in those regions and reserves the right to take further action if deemed necessary.
The ROC was previously punished by the IOC after recognizing the Olympic committees of the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine, namely Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye.
The IOC will then make a decision regarding the use of the Russian flag, anthem, colors, or any other identification at the Olympic Games at an appropriate time.
In addition, Russian athletes must meet relevant anti-doping requirements to participate in international competitions.
