TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Four U.S. service members and three civilian contractors were injured in an Iranian ballistic missile attack on a U.S. military base in Kuwait last week, according to a CBS News report on Sunday, as cited by Anadolu.
The strike was launched in response to a U.S. airstrike near Bandar Abbas Airport in southern Iran. All seven personnel sustained minor injuries and returned to duty within 24 hours, CBS News reported.
Kuwait, which hosts a major U.S. military presence, said on Monday that its forces had intercepted incoming drones and missiles, although it did not specify their origin.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later claimed responsibility for targeting a U.S. base in Kuwait, describing the attack as retaliation for U.S. strikes on Iranian military sites over the weekend.
According to Iran's Tasnim News Agency, the IRGC said the missile strike took place at 4:50 a.m. local time (0120 GMT), hours after what it described as a U.S. aerial attack near Bandar Abbas using airborne projectiles.
In a subsequent statement, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the missile attack had been "successfully intercepted by Kuwaiti forces."
The incident marked the latest escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran. Gulf states hosting U.S. military facilities have faced several attacks during the conflict, with Iran saying it is targeting the American military presence in the region.
Regional tensions surged on Feb. 28 when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, prompting Tehran to respond with waves of drones and missiles targeting sites across the region. Iran also closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
A ceasefire brokered by Pakistan took effect on April 8, but subsequent talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. U.S. President Donald Trump later extended the truce indefinitely while maintaining restrictions on vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports through the strategic waterway and repeatedly suggesting that a broader peace agreement remained within reach.
