TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the lead of various parks and museums, the Jakarta government is considering extending the operating hours of Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta to include nighttime visits. This initiative aims to offer the public more options for experiencing the zoo's diverse offerings.
During his visit to the zoo on Thursday, August 14, 2025, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said, as reported by Antara, "I am contemplating whether it is time for Ragunan to be open not only during the day, but also in the evening."
The Governor noted that Ragunan Zoo is comparable in quality to Taman Safari, which successfully runs a "Night Safari" program. This program allows visitors to observe wild animals like tigers, elephants, giraffes, and lions during their more active nocturnal hours.
Pramono is considering implementing a similar program at Ragunan. Currently, the zoo is open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, and is closed on Mondays for the animals' rest day.
Ragunan's Flora and Fauna Collection
Pramono also highlighted the quality of Ragunan's collection, which he believes is one of the best in Southeast Asia, with 65,000 flora and approximately 2,200 fauna. However, he acknowledged that the zoo's potential has not been fully realized. To address this, the Jakarta Provincial Government plans to revitalize the zoo to enhance visitor comfort and attract more people.
"Compared to Singapore, which is a small [city-state], their revenue is surely high. This is because their facilities are truly well-made," he added.
Price Increase for Non-Jakarta Visitors
Following the revitalization, Pramono plans to implement a differentiated pricing model. Jakarta residents who hold a Jakarta Smart Card will be granted free entry, as will the elderly. Visitors from outside Jakarta and foreign tourists will be charged higher entrance fees.
The Governor explained that this price increase is intended to help maintain the quality of the zoo. However, the new entrance fees have not yet been specified. Currently, adult tickets cost Rp4,000 and children's tickets cost Rp3,000.
Antara contributed to the report.
