Jakarta Monitors 3 Confirmed, 6 Suspected Hantavirus Cases

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Jakarta Health Office, Ani Ruspitawati, said that as of now there are three confirmed positive cases and six suspected cases of hantavirus that are still under close monitoring by health workers.

“So far, we still have three confirmed positive cases as previously reported, and there are six suspected cases that continue to be monitored until today,” Ani said at the Meruya Selatan II Auxiliary Health Center in Kembangan District, West Jakarta, on Monday.

She said the Jakarta Health Office has followed up on an alert notice issued by Indonesia’s Ministry of Health regarding the spread of hantavirus. The alert circular has been distributed to all health facilities across Jakarta.

In addition, the Jakarta Health Office has also designated several regional public hospitals (RSUD) as sentinel hospitals to provide tighter surveillance of suspected hantavirus cases.

“There is also a rapid response team that continues to implement an early warning system in case there is a significant increase in cases,” Ani said.

She explained that hantavirus is a rodent-borne disease. Therefore, the public is urged to understand its three main transmission routes so that prevention can be carried out effectively.

Residents are advised to be cautious when cleaning nests or areas heavily infested with rats. Ani also emphasized the importance of maintaining clean living habits, including washing hands with soap and running water.

“Public awareness is needed because there are several modes of transmission,” she said.

Hantavirus can be transmitted through inhalation of aerosols from rodent urine, saliva, and feces. When rodent droppings dry and mix with dust particles, they can become airborne and be inhaled by humans.

“Or through direct contact with infected rodent secretions, or even through rat bites,” Ani explained.

Therefore, when cleaning areas with rat droppings, proper ventilation must be ensured. Rodent waste should also be disinfected before being cleaned up.

“At home, we can use bleach, a common household disinfectant, before cleaning the droppings,” Ani added.
