TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung inaugurated the Nyi Ageng Serang Library in the Kuningan area of South Jakarta on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. The library, whose construction was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, has now reopened with upgraded facilities and a collection of around 55,000 books.
In his speech, Pramono said the library is expected to become a literacy center as well as a space for learning and community activities, particularly for students and university students. He added that the library's book collection will continue to be expanded in the future.
"Later, I will ask for the books to be added and supplemented, as this place mainly focuses on serious books and is intended for students and university students," Pramono said during the inauguration.
The library is located on the seventh and eighth floors of the Nyi Ageng Serang Building and covers an area of approximately 4,000 square meters. It provides various facilities designed to support reading, learning, research, and community interaction.
The facilities include reading rooms, study and work areas, Serambi Jakarta, Serambi Nada, workshop rooms, a reading enthusiast hall, private booths, discussion rooms, multimedia booths, catalog kiosks, lockers, as well as circulation services, information search facilities, and library guidance services.
Pramono also said the library's operating hours would be extended until 10 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), allowing more people to access the facility after school and working hours.
"It will be open similar to the library at Taman Ismail Marzuki," Pramono said.
He expressed hope that the reopening of the Nyi Ageng Serang Library would benefit not only Jakarta residents but also visitors from other regions who want to access literary resources and educational facilities.
Meanwhile, Head of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia Endang Aminudin Aziz welcomed the opening of the facility, saying the library could play an important role in strengthening reading culture and improving public literacy.
Endang encouraged residents of Jakarta and surrounding areas to take advantage of the facilities provided by the Jakarta provincial government, saying the library could become a center for learning, knowledge development, and community engagement.
