TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government, through its Education Office, will implement distance learning (PJJ) across all educational institutions in the capital starting Monday, September 7, as a precaution against potential volcanic ash exposure from Mount Anak Krakatau.
The policy is formalized in Circular Letter No. 91/SE/2026 on Increased Vigilance Against Volcanic Ash, issued by the Head of the Jakarta Education Office on September 5, 2026.
In the document, the agency notes that volcanic ash consists of microscopic rock fragments, minerals, and other eruptive materials that can travel on wind currents and pose severe inhalation hazards.
Therefore, the distance learning mandate applies to public and private schools across all levels in Jakarta, ranging from early childhood education (PAUD) and community learning centers (SKB/PKBM) to special education (SLB), elementary (SD), junior high (SMP), senior high (SMA), and vocational high schools (SMK).
"Distance learning is being implemented as a preventive measure to safeguard the school community from potential volcanic ash exposure," reads one of the provisions in the circular.
In addition to enforcing distance learning, school administrators are instructed to provide assistance and monitor the implementation of the learning process and offer alternative solutions should hurdles occur.
The agency emphasized that this measure aims to shield students and staff from potential volcanic ash exposure while guaranteeing safety and health across educational communities, particularly among vulnerable age groups.
Implementing remote study also ensures that children's fundamental right to education remains intact despite the environmental threat looming over the capital.
The policy takes effect on Monday, September 7, 2026, and will remain active until further guidance is issued by the Jakarta Provincial Government. Under this policy, academic activities will continue remotely, adapting to environmental conditions while prioritizing the health and safety of students and educational staff.
