Japan Questions UN's Ability to Handle Global Crises

7 hours ago 11

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Japanese Foreign Minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, stated that there are concerns regarding the United Nations (UN)'s capability in responding to international crises.

During a related committee meeting in the Japanese parliament's upper house on Monday, Motegi was asked about the funding of the UN and international organizations, as well as the security functions they support. "Indeed, questions have been raised about whether the UN has sufficient capacity to respond to various international challenges," he responded.

"Specifically regarding the UN Security Council, there are indications that its ability has decreased in preventing and resolving conflicts," he said as quoted by Antara.

Motegi further mentioned that 51 countries were involved in the establishment of the UN, while the organization currently unites more than 190 countries. In this regard, a number of increasingly loud questions have been raised regarding whether the Security Council currently reflects the actual situation of the international community.

Motegi added that Tokyo will continue to push for the reform of the UN Security Council and participate in efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation.
