FOR Jason Momoa, there is no place like Hawaii in the world. Despite often traveling and living elsewhere, there is always an extraordinary moment when he returns home. He shares his favorite islands and must-visit destinations for tourists vacationing in Hawaii.

The star of the series Chief of War was born and raised in Hawaii, which explains his special connection with the island. “There's certain foods, there's the way the water feels for me, the way that the sand feels for me, the way the air smells, how my skin feels here—it's just a deep connection,” Momoa told Travel + Leisure.

Jason Momoa's Favorite Islands in Hawaii

When spending time on the island, the 46-year-old man visits his and his family's favorite places. Such as Makaha Beach, Mokule'ia, and Waimea, which bring back childhood nostalgia for Momoa, climbing cliffs and playing on the beach there. “Pretty much everything on the west side is home, but Makaha is probably my favorite beach in the world,” he said.

But he spends most of his time on Kauai Island. He described the island known as The Garden Isle as a great romantic place. The Aquaman actor suggests first-time visitors of Hawaii visit Kauai. This includes savoring traditional dishes such as lau lau, kalua pig, and poi.

Where to Go in Hawaii, According to Jason Momoa

Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches on its islands. One of the popular destinations visited by tourists is Maui. Each island has its own advantages. For those who are new to Hawaii and want to have fun and explore the city, Oahu is worth visiting because it has many different attractions.

But if you've visited those islands before, he suggests going to an island with active volcanoes; it's even more special because the island has an 'umbilical cord' to the Earth.

“I just feel like any place that's connected to the Earth and that's constantly changing, it has a different feeling there. The first time I stepped foot on Big Island, I was like, 'Oh, there is a whole other energy going on here.' It's our youngest island, so I just feel like there's a lot of mana (spiritual or supernatural power) there,”  he said.

Introducing Culture through Chief of War

Jason Momoa's latest series, Chief of War, is set in Hawaii. This historical series is filmed in Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island, and Aotearoa (Maori's term for New Zealand). This epic drama tells the story of the unification and colonization of the archipelago from the perspective of the indigenous people.

One of the creators of the series, Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, said that this series aims to invite people to see Hawaii from a different perspective. He hopes this series will drive the evolution of tourism on the island.

“There's a host culture where people come in and they're catered to and taken care of, where really the evolution here can be more how do tourists come and be involved in what it is that we're doing? he said.

Momoa also hopes that many people can understand Hawaii through this series. From the perspective of the indigenous people, they are trying to maintain their identity and preserve the arts and culture.

“I don't think a lot of people know that we were a kingdom and that we were royalty and that we had electricity in our palace before the White House did, that we had our own currency. This is American history, and I think a lot of people don't know that,” he said.
