TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received visits from several prime ministers in the first week of July 2026. Prabowo met with Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrance Wong on July 5-6, and later welcomed the arrival of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Modi will be in Indonesia until July 8. The meetings between Prabowo and the two prime ministers at different times resulted in several agreements. Here are some of the points from the meetings.

Meeting with Singaporean PM Lawrence Wong

PM Lawrence Wong's visit to the country is to attend the Annual Singapore-Indonesia Leaders' Retreat in Jakarta on July 6, 2026. This event marks the second time, after the last Leaders' Retreat when Prabowo met Wong in Singapore last year.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the meeting between Prabowo and Wong is part of the annual agenda of the two state leaders. He stated that there were 26 agreements signed between Indonesia and Singapore.

One of the agreements between the two state leaders concerns the Malacca Strait. President Prabowo stated that Indonesia is committed to maintaining the Malacca Strait as an international shipping lane.

During the bilateral meeting, Prabowo stated that Singapore also agreed to maintain the Malacca Strait as a passage that is open to all parties. According to him, this region plays a vital role for the surrounding countries.

"We must maintain security, peace in the strait, and also security from pollution, accidents, and piracy," he said after the meeting on Monday, July 6, 2026.

Therefore, he said, Indonesia and Singapore will also coordinate with Malaysia and Thailand to keep the Malacca Strait open to anyone in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Sea or UNCLOS 1982.

In addition, the meeting between Prabowo and Wong also discussed the Taruna Nusantara High School and Garuda School. PM Wong said the two countries agreed to strengthen diplomacy at the citizen level with student exchange programs.

Wong said one of these is through the exchange of students from the Garuda School, a program initiated by Prabowo that is currently ongoing. "We want to encourage more exchanges with the Garuda School so that our young people can learn from each other," he said.

In addition, he said, universities in Singapore have also received a visit from students of Taruna Nusantara High School in Magelang in April 2026. Singapore's higher education institutions, Wong said, will return the visit to Taruna Nusantara High School next month. "Programs like this can build friendship and mutual understanding between our nations," he said.

Cooperation in electricity export was also a topic of discussion in the meeting between Prabowo and Wong in Indonesia. Prabowo said Indonesia has signed a cooperation agreement with Singapore in the energy sector.

The Investment Management Agency Danantara has been assigned to carry out the cross-border electricity trade cooperation with Singapore. Three memoranda of understanding were signed with several energy companies from Singapore to expedite the cross-border electricity trade project. This project is targeted to have a capacity of 3.4 gigawatts or more by 2035.

Danantara Investment Management (DIM) signed two memoranda of understanding with Keppel Electric and Sembcorp Utilities, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, to explore cooperation in purchasing low-carbon electricity exported to Singapore.

In addition, Danantara also signed an MoU with Singapore Energy Interconnection to facilitate information exchange and explore cooperation related to commercial and technical aspects of cross-border electricity network development.

Head of BPI Danantara Rosan Roeslani said the electricity exported to Singapore will come from new power plant capacities, separate from domestic supply. "This project is a catalyst for Indonesia's green industrialization. Interconnection with Singapore is one manifestation of a larger strategic transformation," said Rosan.

Meeting with Indian PM Narendra Modi

After seeing off PM Wong, President Prabowo immediately welcomed the arrival of PM Narendra Modi. The Indian state delegation landed at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta on Monday, July 6, 2026.

PM Modi will be in the country for three days, from July 6 to 8. PM Modi himself will not only visit the State Palace on this occasion.

Foreign Minister Sugiono said PM Modi is scheduled to visit the Prambanan Temple on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. "He plans to visit the Prambanan Temple because one of the agreements reached between Indonesia and India is an effort to refurbish or restore the Prambanan Temple," Sugiono said on Monday, July 6, 2026.

But before that, PM Narendra Modi will have a one-on-one meeting with President Prabowo at the State Palace, Jakarta. They will also have a closed-door bilateral meeting.

Indonesia and India, Sugiono said, will sign several memoranda of understanding during PM Modi's visit this time. "There are in the defense sector, the education sector, in the health sector, and also in technology development," Sugiono said.
