The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 in Sarmi, Papua. The quake occurred on Thursday afternoon, August 14, 2025, at 13:48 Western Indonesian Time or 15:48 local time, with updated data revising the initial magnitude of 5.0.

According to Daryono, the Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, the event was a shallow earthquake triggered by movement on the Mamberamo Thrust. "It is still a series of aftershocks from the 6.4 magnitude main earthquake on August 12," he said in a statement released after the event.

Daryono also added that, to date, a total of 251 aftershocks have been recorded, with the largest measuring 5.0 magnitude. The latest earthquake, at 4.8 magnitude, was centered in the sea, 34 kilometers southeast of Sarmi, at a depth of 12 kilometers.

The tremors were felt in the Sarmi region at an intensity of II-III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. At this level, vibrations can be felt by some people indoors, similar to a passing truck. "Modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami," Daryono confirmed.

The main earthquake on August 12 registered an intensity of IV-V MMI, which is considered a destructive scale. The tremors were also felt in distant areas, including Jayapura and Wamena.

The BMKG is urging the public to remain calm and avoid buildings that may have been cracked or damaged by the earthquake. "Check and ensure that your residence is earthquake-resistant, or that there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that could endanger the stability of the building before returning inside."
