TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Sepang circuit in Malaysia is set to host another Formula One (F1) racing later this year, nearly a decade since its last time in 2017, according to The Straits and Sports Illustrated.
The circuit will host the F1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2-4, 2026, between the Azerbaijan races in September 24-26 and the Singapore Grand Prix in October 9-11.
The Bahrain Grand Prix in April was canceled, alongside the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, after tensions in the Middle East escalated following the US-Israel war on Iran. Bahrain's hope to return to the racing calendar for an October slot was also squashed by further escalations between Washington and Tehran.
“We are delighted to confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026,” Stefano Domenicali, F1 CEO said, as quoted from Sports Illustrated.
“Once again, the sport has demonstrated its ability to adapt, find solutions, and deliver, creating an exciting moment for everyone who follows Formula 1."
In its statement, F1 hailed Sepang Circuit as one of its "most iconic and challenging circuits" known for "exciting racing and unpredictable weather," as well as passionate fans.
Sepang hosted the Malaysian GP from 1999 to 2017 before it was removed from the F1 calendar owing to rising hosting costs and licensing fees, but it remained on the MotoGP calendar.
The decision to direct the Bahrain Grand Prix to Malaysia was agreed between the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia. This decision, F1 said in a statement, will allow it to "preserve a Grand Prix that would otherwise not have happened."
The rest of the F1 schedule in 2026 remains unchanged, and information regarding ticket sales will be announced in due time.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hailed the decision to move the Bahrain races to the Sepang circuit, stating that it reflects "the enduring friendship" between both countries, while reaffirming Malaysia's readiness to "welcome Formula One, the FIA, the teams and fans from around the world back to Sepang.”
