TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meta Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg admitted that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) agents at his company has not progressed as quickly as executives had hoped.
As reported by Tech Crunch on Thursday, June 2 local time, Zuckerberg made this statement during an internal company meeting. An AI agent is an AI system capable of understanding instructions, formulating plans, and completing tasks autonomously at the user's command.
According to him, the development of AI agents at Meta has not shown the accelerated progress previously projected.
This statement came several months after Meta laid off approximately 8,000 employees, or about 10 percent of its workforce.
In addition to the layoffs, Meta also reassigned approximately 7,000 employees to various AI divisions, including a team known as Agent Transformation.
During the meeting, Zuckerberg also touched on the company's employee reduction policy. He assessed that the restructuring process was not going as well as expected.
According to him, the move was taken because company executives were concerned that Meta was not moving quickly enough to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape of the technology industry.
Zuckerberg also stated that the expected benefits of the new AI-focused organizational structure have not yet been fully realized.
However, he is optimistic that the company's investments and reorganization will begin to show positive results in the next three to six months.
Several previous reports also described Meta's newly formed AI team as a stressful work environment, based on testimonies from several engineers assigned to the division.
Meta has become one of the most aggressive technology companies investing in the AI sector in recent years. The tech giant has reportedly poured up to US$145 billion (approximately Rp2,601 trillion) into AI infrastructure this year.
