TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After capturing fans’ hearts for over 40 years, Megadeth has officially announced its retirement. The news comes alongside Megadeth's farewell tour and what will be their final studio album, marking an inevitable and emotional conclusion to a monumental career.
Formed in 1983, the American thrash metal legends made the news official via their website. The band’s founder and frontman, Dave Mustaine, speaking through his alter ego Vic Rattlehead on August 14, 2025, wrote:
“There's so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional. Most of them don't get to go out on their own terms on top, and that's where I'm at in my life right now. I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them.”
The 63-year-old and only remaining founding member of Megadeth continued to express his excitement and pride for what’s ahead. “We can't wait for you to hear this album and see us on tour. If there was ever a perfect time for us to put out a new album, it's now. If there was ever a perfect time to tour the world, it's now,” he stated.
In a heartfelt message to the band’s fanbase, the Cyber Army, Mustaine added, “This is also a perfect time for us to tell you that it's our last studio album. We've made a lot of friends over the years and I hope to see all of you on our global farewell tour. Don't be mad, don't be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years.”
Toward the end of his letter, Mustaine shared a genuine tribute to their legacy: “We have done something together that's truly wonderful and will probably never happen again. We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world and how it's played, and we changed the world. The bands I played in have influenced the world. I love you all for it. Thank you for everything.”
Vic Rattlehead's Final Warning
On the same day, Megadeth’s Instagram also shared a teaser post and video captioned “BREAKING NEWS!” The video opens with news anchor clips portraying global disasters, such as floods, eruptions, and chaos. Just when the black glitch came, the clip cuts to the band's mascot, Vic Rattlehead, seated behind a desk with an hourglass and documents marked “Confidential 2026.”
In the video, Vic declared, “For over four decades, I’ve been chained in silence. But the end demands my voice. It is confirmed the next Megadeth studio album will be the last.”
He added, “40 years of metal, forged in steel, ending in fire. And when the new year rises, the global farewell tour. You’ve heard the warning, now prepare yourselves, Cyber Army. Stay loud, stay tuned and meet me on the front lines.”
While the album and tour titles are still under wraps, anticipation is already massive. The combined posts have garnered over 222,000 likes. But one thing is sure: the band’s final album will be their 17th studio release, following 2022’s The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!
As one of the “Big Four” of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, Megadeth's farewell marks the end of a legendary era. With vocalist and guitarist Dave Mustaine as the band’s sole constant member, the final lineup includes bassist James LoMenzo, drummer Dirk Verbeuren, and guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari.
