TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Independence Day is celebrated in various ways, one of which is to climb mountains and hoist the Indonesian flag at their peaks. However, on August 17 of this year, several popular mountain climbing routes were closed for various reasons.

Here are three mountains that are closed for climbers during the Independence Day celebration in 2025.

1. Mount Semeru

The highest mountain on Java Island will not be open for climbing during the Independence Day celebration. The closure of Mount Semeru routes will take place from August 17 to 26, 2025. Climbers who have ascended earlier are required to descend no later than 4:00 PM on August 17.

According to the official Instagram account of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, @bbtnbromotenggersemeru, the park's closure honors the Tengger community's sacred Karo Day. "The climbing route will reopen for all #sahabatmentaritengger on August 27th," as announced on July 16, 2025.

2. Mount Merapi

Mount Merapi, located on the border of Central Java and Yogyakarta, cannot be climbed on Independence Day because its climbing routes have been closed since 2018. This closure is due to the high volcanic activity, such as an effusive eruption. The mountain's status is set at Alert. There is a potential for lava avalanches, pyroclastic flows, and dangerous volcanic material eruptions, as stated on the Instagram page of the Merapi Volcano National Park on August 4, 2025.

3. Mount Merbabu

Not all Mount Merbabu climbing routes are closed on Independence Day. Only the Thekelan route is closed for a month, from August 1 to 31, 2025.

The closure is being carried out to arrange the route and recover the ecosystem, especially since this area was significantly affected by wildfires in 2023. According to the Instagram account of the Merbabu Mountain National Park on July 28, 2025, the closure is intended to ensure visitor comfort and safety. Meanwhile, the Selo and Suwanting routes remain open and can be used for the Independence Day ceremonies at the peak of Merbabu.
