TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nearly a year and a half into his tenure as Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung Wibowo rarely grants impromptu interviews to journalists. He more often leaves that task to his special staff member, Cyril Raoul Hakim, better known as Chico Hakim. For an exclusive interview at his office in Jakarta City Hall, Pramono allotted only 30 minutes to Tempo.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician said he prefers to stay out of the spotlight. “I spent too many years working behind the scenes. What matters is getting the job done,” the former Cabinet Secretary told Tempo journalists Dede Leni Mardianti, Cheta Nilawaty, Yosea Arga, Friski Riana, and Stefanus Pramono, along with photographer Tony Hartawan, on Thursday afternoon, July 2, 2026.
Pramono explained how he is addressing Jakarta’s major challenges as the city approaches its 500th anniversary next year. To reduce traffic congestion, for example, he aims to increase the number of private vehicle users shifting to public transportation. One way is by launching the Transjabodetabek service, which connects Jakarta with surrounding cities.
In the interview, which lasted nearly 40 minutes—longer than scheduled—Pramono also outlined the Jakarta Provincial Government’s strategy for dealing with a Rp15 trillion budget cut this year. He declined to answer questions about his chances of running in the 2029 presidential election.
