Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian reminded the people of Pati, Central Java, not to engage in violent behavior if they intend to hold another protest against Pati Regent Sudewo. According to him, expressing opinions is not prohibited.
On the other hand, he also reminded that the Special Committee (Pansus) by the Pati Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) regarding the Pati Regent, Sudewo, is still ongoing. "I emphasize that the government will continue to function, in accordance with the laws, and the regent can still carry out his duties," said Tito after attending the Constitution Day event at the Parliament Complex Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, August 18, 2025.
He also cited the impeachment of Jember Regent Faida in 2020. Tito stated that at that time, Faida continued to lead her area despite the Jember Regional House of Representatives conducting a dismissal process against the NasDem Party politician.
Ultimately, he said, the impeachment of the regent is in the hands of the Supreme Court as the final decision maker. Therefore, according to him, Pati Regent Sudewo needs to communicate more courteously with the community at this time.
On August 13, thousands of residents of Pati Regency held a demonstration demanding Sudewo's resignation from his position. The main trigger for the protest was a 250 percent increase in the Rural and Urban Land and Building Tax (PBB-P2), which sparked widespread anger among the residents.
This policy was canceled by Sudewo after facing protests. However, the Gerindra Party politician refused to resign. The Pati Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) has formed a special committee to investigate the impeachment of Regent Sudewo.
In the latest development, residents of Pati plan to hold another demonstration to oversee Sudewo's impeachment. The demonstration is planned to take place on Monday, August 25, 2025.
