1. Police Fire Water Cannons, Tear Gas to Disperse Jakarta Protesters
Police fired water cannons and tear gas to push back protesters in front of the parliament complex toward Jalan Pejompongan Raya, Central Jakarta, late Thursday, August 27, 2026.
Tempo observed from inside the DPR building that police initially fired tear gas at the crowd outside while occasionally opening the gates. 2. Jakarta Police: Protesters Other Than Pati Group Intended Only to Cause Damage
The protest on Thursday, August 27, at the Parliament (DPR) building in Jakarta ended in chaos. The police accused the protesters outside the United Pati Society Alliance (AMPB) of coming only to cause a riot.
The Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, stated that the AMPB protesters were orderly in conveying their aspirations. The AMPB protesters had retreated from the DPR building after being received by parliament representatives. “They (the protesters) have returned,” said Budi to journalists on Thursday night.
