TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said President Prabowo Subianto is worried about the rise of thuggery in several regions. He mentioned that Prabowo has been coordinating with the National Police Chief, Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and the Attorney General, ST Burhanuddin, to address the issue of thuggery.
"So, the President and the government are truly concerned. The President has coordinated with the National Police Chief and the Attorney General. The coordination is aimed at finding a way out," he said at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, on Friday, May 9, 2025.
Prasetyo said Prabowo wants to nurture the thugs under the names of community organizations (NGO). Prabowo does not wish the thugs to disturb the business climate and public order.
So far, Prasetyo mentioned that Prabowo has not decided to form an anti-thuggery task force. Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian previously stated that his ministry is joining the Anti-Thuggery Task Force to take administrative action against community organizations registered in his ministry.
Tito Karnavian explained that the Ministry of Politics and Security formed this task force to enforce the existing NGO regulations. NGOs registered as legal entities will deal with the Ministry of Law. Meanwhile, police will deal with NGOs committing criminal offenses.
Tito said that if they violate the rules, one of the sanctions against NGOs is to make a statement releasing their registered status at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Previously, the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs held a Coordination Meeting across Ministries and Institutions in the Meeting Room Nakula, Kemenko Polkam Office, Jakarta.
In this meeting, Coordinating Minister Budi Gunawan emphasized that the government will not hesitate to take firm action against all thuggery and NGOs' activities that disturb the public and potentially hinder investment and public order.
Budi stated that the government will establish an Integrated Task Force for Combating Thuggery and NGOs. The government will also nurture problematic NGOs that disturb security and hinder investment.
