TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy State Secretary Minister Juri Ardiantoro announced that President Prabowo Subianto will soon unveil the theme and logo for Indonesia's 80th Independence Day celebration. Juri said that Prabowo is scheduled to launch it at the Jakarta Presidential Palace on Friday, July 18, 2025.
"So, Pak President will invite several parties to the palace and will launch it live, involving all ministries, agencies, and regional governments to jointly launch the Independence Day's theme and logo," Juri elaborated during a press briefing at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
Furthermore, the government plans to socialize the theme and logo during the car-free day event on Sudirman-Thamrin Street in Jakarta.
"[This aims] to enliven [the celebration] and remind us of where our founding fathers fought for independence," Juri explained regarding the socialization's purpose. "In this context, Pak President will also urge regional governments and the general public to organize various activities."
The former Deputy Chair of the National Campaign Team (TKN) for the Prabowo-Gibran pair also mentioned that the government is considering bringing Pacu Jalur, the traditional boat racing from Riau, to enhance the August 17, 2025, ceremony.
He confirmed that the independence ceremony will be held in Jakarta, not in the new capital Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan. According to Juri, IKN's infrastructure is not yet ready to host state ceremonies. "The Nusantara Capital is still under construction, so we are concentrating on its development."
Last year, then-President Joko Widodo or Jokowi held the 79th Indonesian Independence Day ceremony on August 17, 2024, in IKN. Around 1,400 guests attended the flag-raising, marking the first time in history that a flag-raising ceremony for Indonesia's independence was held at the new capital city. State officials, ministers, religious and cultural figures, and employees involved in the Nusantara project attended as guests.
At that time, the flag-raising for the 79th Indonesian Independence Day was exclusively held at Nusantara Capital, while events at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta followed in a hybrid format.
Last year, Prabowo, then President-elect, had expressed his intention to hold the August 17 ceremony again in IKN. He made this statement while accompanying President Jokowi during the 79th Independence Day celebration.
At that time, Prabowo could not confirm whether the 2025 Indonesian Independence Day event would be held in two locations. "We will see later, but the main thing is the ceremony will be here," said the chief patron of the Gerindra Party.
