TEMPO.COJakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to speak at the 80th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, United States on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. Secretariat of the Cabinet Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that this year's UN General Assembly is an important moment for Indonesia.

Teddy mentioned that Indonesia will once again take the highest level stage at the UN forum. In addition, Indonesia, represented by Prabowo, will voice the interests of the Global South, or developing countries, and strengthen its diplomatic position on the global stage.

"To reaffirm Indonesia's position as a consistent leader of the Global South, advocating for reform agenda of global governance to be fairer and more inclusive," said Teddy in a written statement from the Presidential Secretariat on Sunday, September 21, 2025.

President Prabowo will be the third speaker in the UN General Assembly's General Debate on Tuesday. He will speak after President Lula da Silva of Brazil and President Donald Trump of the United States.

Approximately 193 UN members will attend and speak at the UN General Assembly. Leaders from two non-member observer states, the Holy See and Palestine, will also deliver speeches. One of the observer members, the European Union, will also speak.

Each beginning session of the General Assembly has a theme. Leaders can briefly refer to the theme before moving on to other topics they favor. This year's theme is: "Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights."

Other topics that may be discussed by the leaders include the issue of Gaza. This is because the leaders are meeting amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.

It has been nearly two years and the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory is worsening. Reuters reported that global hunger monitors have warned of an impending famine that has struck and is likely to spread by the end of this month.
