TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung departed for New York at the invitation of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to attend the 2026 Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit to discuss solutions to urban issues.
"This visit is an opportunity for Jakarta to strengthen its role in global intercity cooperation, while also bringing home knowledge and partnerships that can be applied to improve public services and the quality of life for Jakarta residents," Pramono said in an official statement in Jakarta on Friday.
In an invitation letter dated July 27, 2026, Mayor Mamdani called on Governor Pramono and fellow global leaders to gather in New York for the U20 forum to tackle key challenges, including housing affordability, climate change, mobility, and economic opportunity.
The U20 is the official G20 engagement group, offering a platform for civic leaders from major global cities to exchange perspectives and present urban policy recommendations.
As an active U20 member, Jakarta actively engages in intercity initiatives aimed at addressing various urban challenges. Alongside his summit commitments, Pramono is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Mayor Mamdani on Sunday, September 20.
Their discussions will focus on direct collaboration between Jakarta and New York, particularly in public transit, air quality, coastal resilience and water management, waste processing, and food affordability.
Through this meeting, the Jakarta Provincial Government is encouraging intercity cooperation to be realized in concrete programs that benefit the residents of both cities.
During the trip, Pramono will also address a Heat Roundtable hosted by C40 Cities, Harvard University’s Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability, and the Atlantic Council’s Climate Resilience Center.
The event will convene municipal leaders, including the mayors of Paris and Freetown, to share strategies for managing extreme urban heat and strengthening climate resilience.
Expanding into sports and tourism, Pramono is slated to sign a Letter of Intent with New York University. This partnership seeks to advance the sports and tourism sectors, focusing on marketing and event administration, through educational exchange and international cooperation.
