TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has canceled plans to naturalize Jairo Riedewald to play for the Indonesian national team. The Dutch player, who is of Grade A descent and previously played for Crystal Palace in the English Premier League, will not become an Indonesian citizen.
“Jairo has a heavy background, as he has played for the Dutch U-23 national team several times. So, it's not possible,” said PSSI Executive Committee (Exco) member Arya Sinulingga to Tempo at the People's Representative Council building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday night, August 19, 2025.
Earlier, the naturalization of Jairo Riedewald was mentioned by the coach of the Indonesian national team, Patrick Kluivert, in January. At the time, PSSI had said that the process was still ongoing.
The 28-year-old Dutch player’s name was also mentioned alongside Ole Romeny, who has already completed the naturalization process and played four matches, scoring three goals for the Garuda squad.
“I don't know if I can mention his name, but there's one name I can say, Jairo Riedewald. I'm in talks with him,” Kluivert said during his introductory press conference in Jakarta on Sunday, January 12, 2025, as reported by Antara.
Arya also mentioned Mauro Zijlstra, a footballer often rumored to join the Indonesian national team. According to Arya, Mauro's naturalization documents are already at the People’s Representative Council, although he did not provide details on the next steps in the citizenship process.
“The document for Mauro has passed through the State Secretariat and is now at the DPR,” he said.
According to Transfermarkt, Jairo Joaquin Riedewald, also known as Jairo Riedewald, was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, on September 9, 1996. He has ancestry from Suriname, the Netherlands, and Indonesia. His father is from Suriname, while his mother has Dutch and Ambonese heritage.
Riedewald joined Haarlem Youth in 2007 and moved to Ajax Youth a year later. In the Ajax academy, he developed both his technical skills and tactical understanding.
He helped Ajax win the Dutch U-17 Championship in 2013 and the Dutch U-19 Championship in 2014.
Riedewald made his debut for Ajax’s first team in 2014. Since then, he has gained recognition in Dutch football. With Ajax, he won the Eredivisie, the Dutch League title, in the 2013-2014 season.
