TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela continues to rise to 920, while another 3,630 were injured, according to Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez on Friday, June 26.

In a televised address, Rodríguez said that the "seismic doublet" that struck Venezuela's northern coast on Wednesday, followed by strong aftershocks, caused extensive damage in the most affected areas, particularly in the state of La Guaira.

Rodríguez revealed that 383 buildings suffered severe damage, disrupting local infrastructure. In addition, 3,007 residents were displaced and are currently being housed in temporary shelters and field hospitals.

Rescue teams, supported by international search and rescue personnel, are still working to find survivors believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Rodríguez also urged the public to avoid traveling to La Guaira, as traffic congestion is hampering the evacuation of the injured and slowing down emergency response operations.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that two earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on Wednesday, just 39 seconds apart.

According to the USGS, the 7.5 magnitude quake was centered approximately 14.3 miles southeast of the city of Yumare, in Yaracuy state. The 7.2 magnitude quake occurred approximately 14.9 miles northeast of the city of San Felipe, also in Yaracuy state.
