TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson has said his team could have won more Premier League titles if it were not for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
“Pep Guardiola pushed us to completely new limits, I think both of us would agree with that. He pushed us to completely new limits and we should have won more Premier Leagues if it wasn’t for that man,” Robertson said after playing his farewell match for Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, which ended in a 1-1 draw against Brentford.
During his nine years at Liverpool, Robertson won the Premier League twice under Jürgen Klopp and once under Arne Slot.
His Premier League tally could have been higher if Liverpool had not been beaten by City in the 2018/19 and 2021/22 seasons, when Guardiola’s side won the title by just one point.
Those two titles were part of Guardiola’s six Premier League championships, alongside triumphs in 2017/18, 2020/21, 2022/23, and 2023/24.
“What a servant to Manchester City and I wish him all the best,” Robertson added, referring to Guardiola, who also parted ways with the club after a 10-year spell.
Across his Liverpool career, Robertson made 378 appearances in all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing 69 assists.
His near-decade at Anfield produced nine major trophies, including two Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup.
Although he did not end the season with silverware, Robertson said he was pleased his final months still helped Liverpool secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
“It's been a hugely disappointing season from how we wanted it to pan out, but it was clear, certainly before Christmas, that it wasn't going to be the one that we wanted it to be in terms of winning thing,” he concluded, as quoted by beIN Sports.
