Russia accused Ukraine on Tuesday of preparing a "provocation" to disrupt the upcoming meeting between President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, in Alaska. The summit is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025.
According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry, which cited "available information received through several channels," Ukraine was allegedly planning an airstrike on densely populated residential areas or hospitals.
As reported by Anadolu, the ministry claimed the attack was intended to be documented by foreign journalists to "create a negative media background and conditions for the disruption of Russian-American cooperation on issues of resolving the conflict in Ukraine."
The statement further alleged, "For this purpose, a group of foreign media journalists was delivered to the city of Chuhuiv in the Kharkiv region (in northeastern Ukraine) by SBU (Ukraine’s Security Service) vehicles on Monday, August 11." The ministry also claimed that similar "provocations" might occur in other locations.
Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on these allegations.
The meeting between Putin and Trump will be their first face-to-face interaction since the conflict began nearly three and a half years ago. They are expected to discuss potential solutions to end the war in Ukraine.
In a separate development, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to prepare for the summit, the U.S. State Department announced on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Tammy Bruce, as reported by Anadolu, stated that both sides affirmed their commitment to a successful event during the phone call, which focused on the arrangements for the Alaska talks.
The White House described the meeting as a "listening exercise" for Trump. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt noted that the president’s goal is to gain "a better understanding of how we can end this war" in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited, with Leavitt adding that the meeting was held at Putin’s request.
The summit will mark the first meeting between the current Russian and U.S. presidents since June 2021 and the first visit by a Russian president to Alaska since the territory was sold by the Russian Empire to the U.S. in 1867.
