TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Every Saturday night, dozens of students from Gadjah Mada University gather at the UGM Innovation and Creativity Center in Sleman, Yogyakarta. They discuss strategies for the student movement to monitor the administration of President Prabowo Subianto.
Among the groups attending the forum is the UGM Student Union, an organization formerly known as the UGM Student Executive Board (BEM UGM). “The meetings are aimed at building trust among students,” UGM Student Union Chair Bintang Mesa told Tempo on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
One outcome of the Student Union’s consolidation was its rejection of a public dialogue with several ministers from the Red-and-White Cabinet who visited UGM on Monday, June 15, 2026. During the event, students rushed the stage and halted the forum attended by Head of the National Agency for Poverty Alleviation Budiman Sudjatmiko, Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono, and Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning Minister Nusron Wahid.
According to Mesa, the event merely served as a government mouthpiece because there was no dedicated question-and-answer session with the audience. Students also criticized Budiman’s political position. Once an activist during the 1998 Reformasi movement, Budiman is now part of Prabowo Subianto’s administration, even though Prabowo, as a former Indonesian Military (TNI) Special Forces commander, was accused of abducting activists like Budiman.
