Tehran Condemns US Revocation of Iran Oil Export Permits

1 week ago 47

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the U.S. Treasury Department's decision to revoke Iran's oil export permits and warned Washington that Tehran would take any steps to protect its interests and national security.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced the suspension of Iran's general oil export license. A new rule was implemented that prohibits new transactions and requires all existing deals to be completed by July 17.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the U.S. Treasury's move to lift the temporary suspension of the embargo on Iranian oil sales, which is a gross violation of Article 10 of the Memorandum of Understanding to End the War and holds the U.S. government responsible for the consequences of this breach of promise," the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, as quoted by ANTARA.

The revocation of the permit issued on June 18 was cited as further evidence of the “untrustworthiness of the U.S. government.”

The ministry stressed, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, while warning of the consequences of America’s breach of the agreement, will take any action it deems necessary to protect its interests and national security.”

The memorandum of understanding signed online on June 18 gives the two countries 60 days to negotiate a final agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue and U.S. sanctions.

The document also sets out a timetable for lifting the U.S. naval blockade and restoring Iranian shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz.
