TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Thai government has announced that it is reinforcing its defense positions along the Thailand-Cambodia border. Jirayu Huangsub, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office and a member of the Ad Hoc Centre for the Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation, provided an update on developments from August 13 to August 14.
As reported by Nation Thailand, Jirayu said that the Thai Army continues to maintain strong defensive positions across 11 areas in seven provinces, with ongoing deployment of razor wire to protect Thailand’s sovereignty, and that the army is ready to respond immediately to any breach of Thai territory, no matter how small.
He also reported that explosive ordnance disposal teams had discovered landmines suspected of being illegally planted by Cambodian forces in Thai territory. This action is considered a violation of both the ceasefire agreement and the Ottawa Treaty, which prohibits anti-personnel landmines.
Therefore, Jirayu confirmed that the Thai government will take the matter up with the Ottawa Treaty Committee to pursue further actions against Cambodia.
Earlier, Bangkok had demanded that Cambodia accept two ceasefire conditions proposed on August 7, 2025, in Malaysia. The conditions included addressing cross-border crimes, such as call center syndicates, human trafficking, and drug trade, and providing assistance in clearing landmines.
The spokesperson noted that the repatriation of citizens to their hometowns was proceeding smoothly and that the government would provide updates on any incidents through local authorities.
Jirayu also refuted false rumors about evacuation orders, stating, "The government confirms that there are no emergencies. Returning citizens can continue with their lives as normal. If any suspicious objects are found, please report them to the authorities immediately."
According to Thai PBS World, the Thai military has requested donations for border fencing, particularly in four provinces: Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, and Buri Ram.
Army spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree explained that while the government has budgets, the procurement process is lengthy, taking a minimum of one month. Violating procurement rules could lead to legal trouble for officials.
