EVERY air traveler wants a peaceful, clean, and comfortable flight. That's why it's important to know the best and worst airplane seats. Senior flight attendant Lauren Mitchell said that when she is a passenger, she always thinks twice before choosing a seat.
Lauren said that when traveling as a passenger, she pays attention to the seat position more than just the legroom. "Flight attendants know how the cabin works, from airflow to cleanliness, and it changes the way we choose seats," said the woman who has more than 15 years of flying experience, as quoted from Express UK.
According to travel experts at Alpine Elements, many flight attendants avoid certain seats on airplanes. This is also important for other prospective passengers to know. This is not because they are being selective, but there are some parts of the plane that are noisier, less clean, and more susceptible to turbulence.
Airplane seats to avoid
Lauren suggested avoiding the back rows, especially the last seat near the toilet. "It's noisier there, the turbulence sensation is more felt, and frankly, it's one of the dirtiest parts of the plane," said the flight attendant who has worked for a major UK airline.
"Not to mention there are people standing next to you throughout the flight, sometimes leaning on your seat or bumping into you during turbulence," she added.
Alpine Elements travel experts also added reasons for avoiding the back seats. This is because the back seats are frequented by other passengers queuing for the toilet, sometimes touching the nearby surfaces.
Besides, the back part of the plane is also where odors and bacteria are most likely to accumulate. Since the airflow moves from front to back, any airborne particles tend to float towards the back of the plane.
This is not just about germs. The back rows also feel more turbulent, especially during landing or in bad weather. This is because the back of the plane is behind the wings, so it will experience more movement," said experts at Alpine Elements. Passengers who are afraid of flying or prone to motion sickness should avoid these seats."
Best airplane seat positions
Lauren recommended sitting right in front of the wings or near the emergency exit. "These areas tend to be more stable, quieter, and have better air circulation. There is also less foot traffic and queuing," she said.
Many tend to agree with Lauren, one of whom is Benita Ross. She used to book the cheapest seats at the back, until she started feeling unwell during the flight.
"I never thought about seat options until a flight attendant mentioned it. Now I always try to sit near the middle. It really makes a difference," said the 46-year-old woman who works as a teacher.
Meanwhile, travel experts at Alpine Elements added that if flight attendants avoid certain seats and understand the ins and outs of the aircraft, it's a strong reason to follow their advice. So, small changes to the seat can result in a much better flying experience."
