TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has now extended into the world of music. Various AI-based applications, such as Suno and AIVA, are capable of creating complete songs using only simple text commands.
Users are only required to write down their ideas, genre, or desired mood, and AI will automatically produce music compositions without direct human intervention.
On the other hand, the emergence of AI-generated music also creates confusion for casual listeners. Many songs produced by AI possess such realistic quality that it becomes challenging to differentiate them from compositions made by humans. However, there are certain cues to recognize an AI-generated song.
As quoted from Lifehacker.com, here are the characteristics of AI-made songs:
1. Presence of Audio Glitches and Oddities
Many generative AI products leave small traces indicating their digital origin, and the same goes for AI music. Despite sounding convincing, upon close listening, there are often peculiarities left in the song.
Lifehacker provided a song produced by Suno titled Ain't Got a Nickel Ain't Got a Dime as example. At first, it sounds tidy and realistic, but when focusing on the vocals, the voice feels shaky and stiff, akin to auto-tune but more robotic. Similar patterns often appear in other AI-generated songs.
Another song, Stone, also shows oddities. It initially sounds realistic, but after the lyrics "oh, my love", there is an odd vocal modulation and glitch that makes the tune seem incorrectly played.
Ultimately, the instincts and intuition of song creators still remain crucial. Even though human vocals are frequently digitally edited, if the voice sounds peculiar, stiff, or overly robotic, it is highly likely to be AI-generated.
2. Low-Quality Audio
For users of modern streaming services with high-quality headphones, music playback generally sounds clear and sharp. However, AI-generated music often sounds like classic mp3 music, appearing fuzzy, tinny, and flat.
A concrete example can be found in samples from Soundful. When played, although it sounds normal as background music for YouTube, none of them sound truly clear. Samples from Loudly are slightly better, but they still feel compressed into a low-quality format.
Even songs from Suno, known for producing the best AI-generated music at present, sometimes sound like they were downloaded from Napster, despite their efforts to improve the bass drop effect.
There is indeed a lo-fi genre intentionally showcasing "low-quality" sounds, but this characteristic can also serve as a clue to recognize whether a song is generated by AI or not.
3. Monotonous Vocals
AI can create vocals, including those that sound quite realistic, but the results still fall short of perfection. This technology struggles to create natural pitch variations, resulting in vocals that feel flat and lack enthusiasm.
For example, this can be heard in the song Back To The Start. The voice sounds robotic and monotonous, and most words are sung with the same pitch-lively and light, but still sounding flat, almost as if bored.
Another common characteristic of AI vocals is sounding breathless, as if some words have not fully formed. The cause is unclear, but this phenomenon is quite common in AI singers. For example, the AI version of Frank Sinatra struggles to articulate every word when performing a Dua Lipa song.
